Shine Your Light

Next in our series on what we should do once we are saved is to share that good news with others.  We need to be a testimony for Jesus Christ, live in a way that people know we are children of God and invite others to have that gift that we received.

  • Share what the Lord has done for you to those around you.  This is an act of love, to tell the truth so that others can know God.  Be baptized.  It does not save you, but it is an outward testimony of your faith in Jesus Christ.

Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

How do we shine our light?  We must be a witness to those around us in word and deed.  Live according to God’s word and tell others about Jesus Christ and His saving grace.

Romans 10:8-15

But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:

“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace,

Who bring glad tidings of good things!”

Know the scriptures so you can share with others.  Not only that, but you have a personal experience with Jesus Christ, often people will listen more to your testimony of what the Lord did for you personally.  As you do pray that the Holy Spirit will speak to their heart and be ready to answer questions, to guide them and to pray with them.  Let God do the rest.

1 Peter 3:15

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear

2 Timothy 4:1-5

I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

God has given each of us a specific ministry, each of us have specific gifts.  Let us use what God has given us to share Jesus Christ and allow Him to use us to bless others.

One way we can testify our faith in Christ is to be baptized.  When we come to Jesus Christ, we are baptized into His resurrection through the Holy Spirit.  Our old self dies and we have newness of life, everlasting life so that when we die, we will spend eternity with God in heaven.  How great is that?!  Water baptism symbolizes this.  We are not saved by baptism, there is nothing we gain and there is nothing “magical” about it.  It is simply recognizing and confessing that we now have faith in Jesus Christ and that through His death and resurrection we are saved.  In Acts, Philip encountered a man who was seeking to know the scriptures.  As he shared, the man believed with all his heart.  He was saved.  He then was baptized in front of his entourage, professing his faith and confessing that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Acts 8:35-39

Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?”

Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.”

And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”

So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.

Paul describes our salvation and baptism in Romans 6.  This is not being baptized with water but baptism unto Christ’s death and resurrection.  This baptism is through the Holy Spirit.  This is what water baptism symbolizes.

Romans 6:1-14

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

So, believe, have faith, study God’s word and pray, live according to his word, and share your faith with others.
